8-Hour Fall Prevention Details

Falls are one of the primary causes of worker injuries and fatalities. Because of this, New York City’s Department of Buildings (DOB) implemented Local Law 196 of 2017, mandating that certain construction professionals need to complete specific site safety training to enhance worker protection.

A core component of this training is the 8 hour fall prevention course, which provides the necessary knowledge to mitigate these risks effectively. This comprehensive program is designed to equip workers with the skills and knowledge to identify, avoid, and control fall hazards, creating a safer work environment for everyone on a New York City construction site.

What is the 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course?

The 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course is an extended training program designed for construction workers to further enhance their understanding of fall hazards and safety measures. This course covers additional topics beyond the 4-hour course and focuses more on fall protection systems, hazard recognition, scaffold and ladder safety, and other critical aspects related to preventing falls in the construction industry.

Upon completing the 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course, you will receive a certificate of completion. This certificate serves as evidence that you have undergone the required training to enhance your understanding of fall hazards and safety measures in the workplace, as mandated by the New York City Department of Buildings.

The 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course meets the requirement for obtaining a Site Safety Training Card. This awareness-level training, however, does not offer any additional qualifications or authorizations beyond the Site Safety Training Card.

Participants in the 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course will build upon their existing knowledge and skills to develop a more comprehensive approach to identifying, avoiding, and preventing fall hazards in the workplace. Who Needs to Take the 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course?

The 8 hour fall prevention course is typically required for individuals who work in industries or job roles that involve potential fall hazards. This course is mandated for construction workers, supervisors, and other personnel in New York City who work at heights or are involved in activities where falls are a risk.

How Long is the 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course Good For?

The training itself does not expire; however, OSHA mandates that competent persons receive additional training whenever exposure to new fall hazards arises. For instance, if a competent person trained for scaffolding encounters new hazards working with roofing systems, they must undergo training specific to those roofing system hazards to ensure continued competence.

Why Take the 8 Hour Fall Prevention Course

Taking the 8-hour fall prevention course is beneficial for anyone working in industries with fall hazards. Taking the 8-hour fall prevention course offers several benefits, including:
