NYC DOB Update: Full Gas Work Qualification Requirements Announced
For those doing gas work in the city, the New York City Department of Buildings (NYC DOB) has released a notable change. This update mostly addresses the expiration of Limited Gas Work Qualifications and describes the procedures needed to get a Full Gas Work Qualification.
The NYC DOB has set a deadline for people with Limited Gas Work Qualifications given in or after June 2010. These certificates will expire after five years and won’t be amended or reissued. A Full Gas Work Qualification is needed for people who want to officially keep working on gas-related projects in New York City. With this new competence, only highly trained people will be able to work on gas plants. This will make sure that gas supplies are reliable and safe for everyone in the city.
The NYC Administrative Code Section 28- 423.1 states only persons having a Full Gas Work Qualification or a Licensed Master Plumber (LMP) are authorised to carry out gas work within the city. Those with limited gas work qualifications can keep working under direct oversight of an LMP or professional with a full gas work qualification.
Applications seeking a Full Gas Work Qualification must adhere to particular criteria and procedures:
- Meet the Experience Requirements: Applicants must have a minimum of five years of full-time experience in gas work, at least one year of which should be in New York City, under the supervision of an LMP.
- Schedule and Complete the Examination: Candidates need to submit an LIC41: Written Examination Application form, selecting “Gas Work Qualification.” After the form submission, applicants receive an email with scheduling instructions within two to three weeks. The exam fee is $585, payable in person by money order at the Central Cashier’s Office (280 Broadway, 1st Floor).
- Submit Exam and Application Documents: After passing the exam, applicants should log in to their DOB NOW account to complete the license application. If needed, applicants can create a new account on the NYC DOB website. They must upload all required documents, including the Gas Work Qualification Exam Score Report.
