NYC DOB Extends Final 2022 Benchmarking Compliance Deadline to February 21, 2024
The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) has recently extended the final deadline for 2022 benchmarking compliance. Originally set for February 1, 2024, building owners now have until February 21, 2024, to submit their data. This extra time allows those affected by a recent platform upgrade to complete their compliance requirements without facing immediate penalties.
The extension decision follows a recommendation from the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice (MOCEJ). A temporary upgrade to the utility’s automatic data upload platform caused the system to become read-only as of January 9, 2024. The transition limited data submissions, prompting the DOB to offer building owners an additional three weeks to fulfill their obligations.
This extension applies to covered buildings required to submit energy and water usage data for 2022. Benchmarking is a critical component under NYC’s Administrative Code §28-309.4, ensuring that energy and water use data is available to promote environmental goals and more sustainable building management practices. Building owners who miss this new February 21 deadline will face compliance violations and related penalties.
For building owners who may need additional support in completing their benchmarking requirements, the NYC Sustainability Help Center offers assistance Monday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Owners can reach out by emailing Help@NYCsustainability.org or by calling (212) 566-5584. This resource is available to provide guidance on using the system and fulfilling the DOB’s requirements.
To stay updated on the details and requirements for energy and water benchmarking, building owners are encouraged to visit the NYC Benchmarking page on the DOB website. The page offers essential information, helping owners stay on track with city regulations.
The NYC DOB’s decision reflects its commitment to supporting building owners while maintaining the city’s environmental standards. This extension provides crucial relief to those affected by the temporary platform issues, ensuring a smoother compliance process.
