NYC DOB Announces New Online Form for Special Inspection Agency Renewals
The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) has issued an important update for Special Inspection Agencies (SIAs) regarding the registration renewal process. Starting on January 15, 2024, SIAs will be required to use a new online form for renewing their SIA registrations. This update aims to streamline the renewal process, replacing the previously paper-based method to make it more efficient.
Currently, SIAs need to submit a paper SIA1 application form to renew their registrations. However, beginning January 15, 2024, the renewal process will shift to an online-first approach. Agencies must enter their information electronically, which generates a populated SIA1 Coversheet and SIA1 Application. Once generated, these documents, along with required supporting materials, a signed and sealed application by all listed directors, and the registration renewal fee, must be printed and mailed or delivered to:
NYC Department of Buildings
Licensing & Exams Unit
Attn: Special Inspection Agency Registration
280 Broadway, 1st Floor
New York, NY 10007
It’s important to note that non-system-generated applications will no longer be accepted, making this online form mandatory for all renewals moving forward.
Another critical change outlined in the update is that renewal applications can no longer be used to request changes to an agency’s registration record. For any updates, such as changes to the agency’s name, address, directors, or endorsements, SIAs must submit a separate paper SIA1 application. This submission needs to include a cover letter on official agency letterhead, detailing the requested changes. Agencies can refer to the NYC DOB’s “Registration Requirements for Special Inspection Agencies” webpage for further guidance on this process.
The updated SIA1 application form, dated January 2024, will be available on January 15, 2024. Only this newly updated form will be accepted for renewals after this date. The NYC DOB emphasizes that agencies should prepare accordingly to ensure they’re using the correct form for their 2024 renewals.
This new system represents a significant step towards modernizing the DOB’s administrative processes and supporting a more organized and efficient approach for both agencies and the department.
Stay tuned for more updates and information on this and other NYC DOB initiatives.
