NYC DOB Extends Filing Representative Registration Requirements
In a recent update, the New York City Department of Buildings (NYC DOB) announced an important change to the registration requirements for Class 1 and Class 2 Filing Representatives. Typically, these professionals need to complete department-approved training courses to either obtain or renew their registration. However, since the required courses are currently unavailable, the NYC DOB will temporarily allow new and renewal registrations without proof of course completion.
This change impacts the June 2010 Class 1 and Class 2 Filing Representative registrations, meaning that individuals can proceed with their applications by submitting an affidavit. By signing and notarizing the Class 1/Class 2 Filing Representative Future Completion of Training Courses Affidavit, applicants agree to complete the required training within six months after it becomes available.
To take advantage of this extension, applicants need to log into DOB NOW, the department’s online portal, which can be accessed at nyc.gov/dobnow. Here’s a quick guide on how to complete your application or renewal:
- Log into DOB NOW – If you don’t have an eFiling account, you’ll need to create one. Visit nyc.gov/dobnowtips for guidance.
- Navigate to the BIS Options Portal – Select the “+License” button, then choose either “New License” or “License Renewal.”
- Select License Type and Sub-Type – Choose “Filing Representative” and specify “Class 1” or “Class 2” as appropriate.
- Upload the Affidavit – Under the Documents tab, upload the signed and notarized affidavit as a “Course Completion Certificate” in PDF format.
For a complete walkthrough, the NYC DOB provides a New License Application User Guide on their website. The guide includes step-by-step instructions to simplify the application process.
To learn more about registration requirements or get support with your application, visit the DOB Licensing page. For questions or additional support, you can also reach out via the DOB Help Form, which connects applicants with NYC DOB assistance.
This temporary policy offers greater flexibility to professionals, giving them more time to complete necessary training while maintaining their eligibility for the registration process.
